Cribbage rules
The deal & crib
Each player gets 6 cards and discards 2 to the dealer's 'crib'. A starter card is cut (if it's a Jack, the dealer pegs 2).
The play (pegging)
Players alternate playing cards, adding to a running count that can't pass 31. Score as you go: hit 15 or 31 (+2), make a pair (+2/+6/+12), complete a run (+3 or more), or take the last card (+1). Say 'Go' when you can't play.
The show
Then everyone counts their hand (and the dealer the crib) with the starter: 2 points per fifteen, pairs, runs, a 4- or 5-card flush, and 'his nobs' (a Jack matching the starter's suit).
Winning
Peg your score along the board — first player to 121 wins.
Strategy tips
- Keep cards that make 15s and runs together.
- If it's not your crib, discard cards that won't help the dealer.
- In the play, avoid leaving the count at 5 or 21 (an easy 15/31 for your opponent).
- Lead from a pair-safe card to bait — then pair back.
